Choosing Your 90 Days

Summer is finally here, and I’m sure all you are doing is relaxing, enjoying the sunshine and thinking about Meaningful Use (MU). Most of you are either in the middle implementing the upgrade of your electronic health record (EHR) to the 2015 version or in the middle of planning your upgrade.
If at all possible, I recommend you choose your 2017 Meaningful Use reporting period (for both the EHR Incentive Program and the Merit-based Incentive Payment System [MIPS]/Advancing Care Information [ACI] program) before your upgrade, using your existing MU reports and workflows.
It may be easier to validate and report the data on your existing EHR version. Once you perform the required upgrade to your EHR, you may have to rebuild reports, revalidate data and retrain on workflows in the new version.
Here are the steps for choosing your 90 days:
- Decide if you want to report before or after your upgrade (recommend before).
- Run your Modified Stage 2 MU reports and verify your performance based on EHR program (Medicare/Medicaid) or MIPS/ACI.
- Work to improve performance to levels needed for each measure.
- As soon as performance levels are hit, use those 90 days for reporting.
Upgrading your EHR will be enough work without also worrying about MU reporting. For more information on the steps needed or 2017 EHR Incentive Program (MU) reporting requirements, see our blog post from April 24, 2017.
